Get up and dance to celebrate
International Dance Day – April 29
Let’s appreciate International Dance Day on April 29 and celebrate dancers from all over the world!
Dancing impacts our lives, whether we know it or not, from Dancing with the Starts episodes, TikTok performances, or flash mobs performing in the streets. International Dance Day promotes art and culture as well as raises awareness among the public regarding the “art of dance.”
International Dance Day was created to allow the world to recognize dance as a professional art form. “Dancing gives us the ability to communicate emotions deeper than our own language, sometimes even with the song behind it” (International Dance Day).
International Dance Day was created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) to honor Jean-Georges Noverre’s birthday, the famous creator of modern ballet. It wasn’t until 1982 that the day had been noticed and since then had been celebrated (National Day Calendar) .
Dance brings people together and provides them with a sense of community with people that have the same interests and passion. “People reflect each other constantly, but when they dance, perhaps what they reflect most is that moment of honesty.” -Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, dancer and choreographer, message author for International Dance Day 2012 (Facebook).
