From seeds or sprigs, it’s time to grow
National Plant a Flower Day – March 12
Spring is around the corner and the lovely flowers are blooming. The bugs and animals that were in hibernation are coming out to play.
On March 12, you get to participate in National Plant a Flower Day. You get to plant any of your favorite flowers and to celebrate the coming of spring. Even in California, March isn’t the best season to plant outdoors, but you could get some indoor plants in some flower pots. Some of the best flowers to plant this month are marigolds and daffodils.
Flowers have been growing for as long as our Earth has lived. There are over 400,000 species of flowering plants. They are used for decorating, for medicinal purposes, and in many more ways. Over time people have adapted flowers into their religious rituals and traditions. In weddings, the bride throws a bouquet over her head for the single ladies to catch, to signify who gets to be married next. You give special roses to your loved ones on Valentine’s Day. The beauty of flowers has given inspiration to artists. Could you be able to imagine a world without them?
Flowers help fight against pollution, especially during our climate change crisis. It feels marvelous being outdoors on a bright sunny day and spending time with your favorite people. Flowers bring color to the world and many provide a sweet aroma that encourages people to be at peace.
Before you plant a flower this month, it would be a good idea to research what flowers are in season or what grows locally. Then, let this day encourage you to start your own lovely garden.
