A day away from children’s characters
Barbie & Barney Backlash Day – December 16
December 16 is a day for parents to take a short vacation from the repetitive rhymes, story-telling, and sing-along-songs from the shows like Barbie and Barney. On this day, known as Barbie and Barney Backlash Day, parents can squash their children’s fantasies by telling them the truth: their Barbie’s won’t talk because they are plastic dolls and Barney is just a man in a big costume. Most parents wonder when they can tell their children the truth about their favorite fantasies, so this day was created just for that purpose.
Barbie and Barney have been very popular characters in the lives of children for the last several years, and television programs featuring them have become standard ways for children to be entertained, but it can all be a little overwhelming for parents. Do you remember your own obsession with one or both of these characters?
Barbie has been an inspiration to many young girls, showing what kind of careers girls can pursue when they are older. In the last decade, however, she has made her appearance on her own Netflix show, Life in the Dreamhouse (https://www.netflix.com/title/70294800) and, according to www.featuredanimation.com, there are over 37 Barbie movies, and little girls are in awe of the girl, portrayed as a teen success story.
Barney & Friends is a captivating, entertaining and fun program for little children. The show, which features a famous purple dinosaur, doesn’t have any overt educational qualities, and it doesn’t focus on challenging real life events. On Barbie and Barney Backlash Day, parents can complain about the iconic and annoying “I Love You” song, although the song and the show are age appropriate for preschoolers.
At the end of the day, it is a decision of maturity. Is it time to reveal the truth about these iconic characters or is it better just to take a break from their influence? Celebrate in a way that won’t ruin the days that follow, especially with Christmas just over a week away.
