Anyone who has studied American history is aware that the Bills of Rights is the first ten amendments to the Constitution. The document spells out the rights of Americans in relation to their government. It also guarantees civil rights and liberties to the individual freedom of speech, press and religion.

On December 15, we celebrate this document Bill of Rights Day. This day gives us a chance to recognize the value of things like the right to free speech, the right to bear arms, the right to a speedy trial and more.

The amendments list specific prohibitions on government power in response to calls from several states for greater constitutional protection and individual liberties, according to http://tiny.cc/lb46tz. It was written by James Madison, who became our fourth President.

The Bill of Rights helps define the American political system and the government’s relationship to its citizens, and it is important that they can be honored on Bill of Rights Day. This document has been the source of many solutions in court when people’s freedoms and rights have been challenged. The document is more than just protections of liberty and property. It is a promise from our forefathers.
