Everyone should be accepted.

Do you identify as LGBTQ+? Have you ever wanted to join a club for it? If so, here’s everything you need to know!

Armijo’s Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Club allows anyone LGBTQ+ or supporters to join. “The events and goals are designed by students and I am here to help make it happen!” said club adviser Ms. Vanessa Walling-Sisi.

The GSA Club creates a safe environment for students, their families, and allies. Ms. Walling-Sisi has been the advisor for 15 years. In 2005, Billie and Tori, two of her students from International Club, asked her to start a new GSA Club.

Over the years, the GSA Club has run several informational/poster campaigns, as well as presented to the staff. They have also hosted the annual “Day of Silence” and organized other demonstrations in support of sexual identity. They are also partnered with the Fairfield Pride Center, who run educational and social events.

The GSA Club is important because LGTBQ+ students are less likely to drop-out, skip school or suffer depression if their school has a GSA, according to . Statistics show that schools with a GSA tend to have safer campuses and fewer incidences of violence against LGTBQ+ students. There is a lot of data and information on . Another good website for GSA Clubs is . “They provide a lot of great educational and social material for GSA,” said Ms. Walling-Sisi.

Everyone is invited to the first GSA meeting of 2020-2021! We will have a virtual meeting to talk about the club mission and activities you would like to have this year.
