Different cultures, different breakfasts!
- Starting with the United States, a common dish to start the day is bacon and eggs. This can be found in any home or restaurant across the country and can be accompanied by a side of toast or pancakes. It’s a real simple dish but provides protein for the day.
- In the United Kingdom the Full English Breakfast is a jam-packed plate of food. This traditional breakfast dish usually features eggs, bacon, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, black pudding, and toast. This filling meal is popular amongst tourists to experience a traditional British breakfast. However, most UK residents can be found eating this after a long night out.
- Sweden offers an elevated version of an open faced sandwich with smörgås. These Swedish sandwiches can be topped with a variety of ingredients including ham, cheese, lettuce, and hard boiled eggs.
- A familiar dish is served in Spain: churros and chocolate. However, these sweet treats are not topped with cinnamon sugar, but instead lightly dusted with sugar or not topped at all. It’s common to dip them in a thick and rich chocolate sauce.
- An egg-originated dish is the popular breakfast food in Turkey. Menemen is scrambled eggs mixed with tomatoes, chilies, spices, olive oil, and usually paired with toast. The egg scramble is a hardy start to the day and a twist on a traditional American breakfast scramble.
- In Russia, porridge is the meal to have for breakfast. Kasha is a whole grain that gets roasted and made into an oatmeal like porridge with milk and sugar. It is occasionally served with jam for extra sweetness. A quick and simple breakfast that’s high in fiber and protein.
- Kande Pohe is a dish unique to Western India meaning flattened rice. The rice easily picks up the flavors of the toasted chilies, onions, and spices. It’s sometimes served with porridge or savory grain pancakes.
- Taiwan’s popular breakfast street food Jianbing translates to fried pancake but is more like a crepe. It’s topped with an array of ingredients from ham, soybeans, pork, and chili sauce. It’s a meal to grab and go while out and about but still filling.
- This sweet and savory breakfast treat from Venezuela called cachapas is a sweet corn pancake. The pancake is stuffed with queso de mano, which is similar to mozzarella cheese. It’s sometimes confused with another breakfast item, arepas. The difference is arepas are made from a maize dough and split open like a sandwich.
- Another sweet treat for breakfast comes from Tanzania. Mandazis are fried dough made with coconut milk and naturally enriched with peanuts or almonds. They are similar to doughnuts and beignets. Can be served with fruit sauces or topped with powdered sugar or cinnamon.
