Libraries create opportunities for everyone.

Since 1987, September has been marked as National Library Card Sign Up Month. The month was formed to ensure that every child signs up for their own library card. To this day, libraries have continued to celebrate National Library Card Sign Up Month in hopes of encouraging kids to obtain a library card. Having a library card teaches kids the importance of caring for things that belong to others. Of course, kids will be more eager to read once they sign up for a library card. Reading helps with brain development, which leads to a solid foundation of language and literacy skills.

This September, the American Library Association’s theme for National Library Card Sign Up Month is DC’s Wonder Woman. According to their website, “Armed with the Lasso of Truth, Wonder Woman makes a perfect ambassador support the value of learning and the role libraries play in transforming lives and strengthening communities through education.” Soon, libraries across the nation will promote this month.

Try visiting your local library, and sign up for a library card if you don’t already have one, and open a new book!
