Choose to be happy
Happiness Happens Month – August
In 1999, the Secret Society of Happy People chose August 8 as Admit You’re Happy Day, but one day of confessed bliss was not enough. The next year, the society claimed the entire month of August as Happiness Happens Month. It has been celebrated by the Society and beyond, and everyone is encouraged to participate.
Abraham Lincoln said, “Folks are usually about as happy as they make their minds up to be,” and August allows you to choose your level of happiness. The Declaration of Independence even brings up our rights as “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and August can be the month to intensify that pursuit.
Even during a pandemic, there are lots of ways to create happiness. Some methods focus inward, like inviting friends to do things that are enjoyable and familiar or things that are risky and surprising. Other methods focus outward, like doing things that bring a smile to the faces of others, intentionally spreading happiness to friends and those who can benefit from your help. Satisfaction in being happy can come in different ways throughout the month, but most people have to make at least a minimal effort to be happy.
In order to celebrate this day and spread the joy, posting happy moments on social media, tagged with #HappinessHappensMonth. Remember that happiness is contagious and it is definitely worth catching.
