April’s Global Youth Service submissions extended to June 19
Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is a coordinated annual event celebrated every year in April to gather young volunteer workers around the world in conducting community service, service learning, and youth voice with over 2,000 youth organizations from around the world participating each year. While the event officially took place between April 17 -19, due to COVID-19, however, contributions can be recognized through June 19. Many organizations across the United States engage in GYSD activities such as the United States Conference of Mayors, Woodmen of the world, and Habitat for Humanity. This year, GYSD events were organized by the Youth Service America (YSA) with several more organizations and GYSD’s primary sponsor was State Farm.
In 1988, YSA and the Campus Outreach Opportunity League (COOL) organized the first Global Youth Service Day, originally called National Youth Service Day, with the theme of A Day in the LIfe of Youth Service. Then in 2000, YSA founded the GYSD by adapting the successful model of National Youth Service Day in the United States. This year, GYSD was celebrated from home by calling on the youth to come up with a creative and passionate good deed to do at home through Friday, June 19. For every kind act shared through the #DoGoodFromHome Challenge, Hasbro will donate toys and games, up to 25,000, to organizations providing care to the children of COVID-19 essential workers.
