Canned Food Drive gives Armijo another chance to shine

For the third year in a row, the Fairfield-Suisun School District (FSUSD) is hosting the annual Canned Food Competition between the six high schools (Armijo, Fairfield and Rodriguez are individually competing against the trio of Public Safety Academy (PSA), the Matt Garcia Center and Sem Yeto.

The competition kicked off on Monday, October 31st at Solano Town Center.  Each school has half of a kiosk that they decorated. Ms. Jennifer Hobbs was in charge of the decorating for Armijo’s section. The competition goes through Friday, November 18.

Students who don’t have time to bring their cans to the mall can still benefit. The two first period classes that collect the most cans will earn a breakfast from the leadership class. Also, the club/organization/team that brings in the most canned goods will win a $200 transfer  into their club account from the Associated Student Body (ASB) General Fund. The second place club will get a $100 transfer.

Last year, the district collected over 7,200 pounds of food for the Contra Costa / Solano County Food Bank, according to Sheila Barrett McCabe, Executive Director, Administrative Services and Community Engagement for the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District. While Armijo brought in the majority of the donations (over 4,000 pounds of food), the combination of the PSA, Matt Garcia and Sem Yeto schools brought in another 2,371 pounds and Fairfield High contributed 936 pounds.

Armijo has won the first two years. In 2014, they earned lunch from Fuddruckers.  Last year Armijo won a 3D Printer. The prize this year is again a 3D printer.
