A lifetime of golfing, a year of coaching
Besides being a Physical Education (PE) teacher at Armijo, Coach Robert Steen also coaches the Boys’ Golf team in the spring.
This is his first season coaching the boys’ team, but in the fall he coached the Girls’ Golf team for Armijo.
Coach Steen said that one thing he likes about being a coach is seeing kids do things that they would usually say they can’t do and seeing them recognize their strengths. He enjoys seeing his athletes achieve their goals and succeed.
It’s not all great, though. Sometimes the beginners on the team have missed out from opportunities to play earlier in their lives, but it is better to start in high school than not at all. Coach Steen wants students to discover that golf is a great sport and the sooner they can play and develop their basic skills, the more fun they will have. “Focus on the next swing and focus on the mistake you made, fix it, and move on from it,” he said.
Of course, Coach Steen likes to play golf himself. He started when he was just in first or second grade, learning the game from his grandfather. He also likes to exercise and hang out with his wife in his free time.
