New Voices and Events from Youth Commission
The Youth Commission has been very active for the month of October, in which newly appointed members, including Commissioners Kelvin Chang, John Curry, Royce Guo, Kiana Sabugo, and Tom Zheng from Armijo, and older commissioners have been adjusting to the internal changes occurring.
On October 3rd, there was a meeting at the Fairfield City Council Chamber at 7pm. The City Manager, Mr. David White, provided a detailed presentation on Measure P. He emphasized that it would provide fiscal and operational sustainability, economic development, community safety, and an improvement of youth centers. The Fairfield Youth Commission asked Mr. White for clarification on some parts and ultimately questioned how they could help pass Measure P, as it would increase the vitality of Fairfield. Mr. White said to just spread what Measure P truly talks about to the youth. Commissioners have been informing many individuals about it in time for November’s election.
On October 17th, the Youth Commission met at the PAL center. The first item on the agenda was to learn how to hold a meaningful subcommittee meeting and plan with a purpose. Afterwards, the liaison, Ms. Heather Sanderson, gave all the commissioners temporary subcommittee assignments. All the subcommittees would be doing a project that would pertain to the goals of the Youth Commission, which include topics such as life after high school, violence prevention, marketing, internal communications, and fun events for the youth. Commissioners met the new people they would be working with until January and selected the projects they would like to do. Meeting schedules were finalized.
On October 24th, the Youth Commission met at the PAL center once again to pass project outlines. Some projects that will benefit the whole youth community are: coffee with a cop, in which youth can drink coffee and chat with law enforcement at the PAL center on certain days; volunteering at PAL, where high school students can volunteer at the PAL center and tutor peers; and Alive & Free, a seminar where “at risk” youth can learn to eliminate violence and hate in their lives and be a positive force in the community. All proposed projects were passed and the commissioners were allowed to begin.
