Monifa finds her mark in basketball
Monifa Mills has been playing basketball for four years. She started in eighth grade and this is her third year on the Varsity Girls’ Basketball team at Armijo. “I can stay in shape and possibly have college scouts looking at me, getting scholarships,” said Mills, but sometimes it is a challenge to work with the team.Especially “when they don’t pull their own weight,” she said. Even though there are challenges , Mills said, “I get along with my team very well and we’re constantly making the best memories together.”
Her favorite memory was a game against Fairfield High School in her freshman year. “We won by I don’t even know how many points,” she said Mills said that something she likes about playing Varsity is that she got to choose her number, #20. “I still don’t know if I want to play for the WNBA because I don’t play for any outside teams,” Mills said.
To newcomers who are interested in trying out for basketball, or any sport, she encourages them “to come with an open mind to tryouts and games, and release your stomach so you won’t be too nervous.”
