Athlete focus: Committed to the future
Matthew Vickroy decided to join the cross country team because he prefers to do a sport that is based on speed as opposed to physical strength. This is his second yearon the team and he plans to continue running when he goes to UC Davis.
Vickroy said that his most memorable race was at the Monticello Empire League (MEL) meet where he ran his best time. “You need a lot of dedication, and no matter how bad you are, with dedication you can make it,” he said dedication can be a challenge when things cared for as much as they should be and, if he could make one change to the Armijo campus, he said that he would like to see them “change the dusty busty rusty equipment because it be old, and it don’t be working.” Still that should not discourage athletes from striving to do their best. “If you really need a pastime, join Cross Country,” he said.
Vickroy is not the only one in his family who is athletic. His sister Lauren plays softball and hopes to be on the Armijo team in the spring. When he is not out on the course, Vickroy enjoys playing video games such as Smash Bros. He said that his role model is his dad because he’s successful. While he plans to get a degree in something like engineering, Vickroy is also considering spending some time in the military.
