Rita Moreno basically opened doors for Hispanic performers in Hollywood.

Hollywood is not only a neighborhood in the central region of Los Angeles, but it is the home of the U.S film industry. Over the years Hollywood has gotten more and more diverse, but back in the late 1800s and early to mid-1900s that wasn’t the case.

The first famous Latina actress in the U.S. was Rita Moreno and she was very popular. She was the first Latina to be nominated for a Grammy and the second person ever to win a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. She was famous in the 1960s from her role as Anita in West Side Story.

It wasn’t until the ‘60s that Hispanic actors and actresses became recognized more in the United States. José Ferrer was the first Puerto Rican-born, first Latino to be nominated for and win an Oscar, receiving a nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Joan of Arc and winning Best Actor for Cyrano de Bergerac. He was very popular during the late 1940s and early 1960s.

Now there are so many Hispanic people in Hollywood. The most famous musician right now is Camila Cabello, or Karla Camila Cabello, a songwriter and actress who rose to fame after joining the popular girl band Fifth Harmony, formed on X-Factor 2012. Gina Rodriguez is Puerto-Rican American actress who rose to fame after getting the leading role in the popular show Jane the Virgin. Diego Tinoco is a rising Mexican actor who became famous after getting a lead role in Netflix On My Block. Tyler Posey is very successful child actor whose mother is Mexican , had multiple roles in movies. He really rose to fame after he got the leading role as Stiles Skilinski in Teen Wolf (2011-2017).

In the last 10 years, Hollywood has upped its game in diversity. There are many diverse actors and actresses in Hollywood right now and the opportunities and roles for this diversity continue to grow.
