Cheerleaders regain their standing

Just like any other sport, the cheerleading squad needs coaches to function. Without the coaches, not much can be done. When the newly assigned coach stepped down at the beginning of the year, new coaches came to the rescue on Saturday, October 15. This has greatly helped the cheerleading squad.

Without coaches, the cheerleaders hadn’t been able to do much. “Because of guidelines, we couldn’t have practices without supervision of coaches. We were basically postponed,” said Mariah Rios, a freshman cheer captain.

Jaiden Russell, a cheerleader who is now a junior, elaborates on how the lack of

coaches restricted the cheerleading squad, “We weren’t allowed to have practice, we weren’t allowed to cheer, we weren’t allowed to say certain stuff in the stands, we almost weren’t allowed to wear our uniforms.” The cheerleaders’ previous lack of coaches had essentially kept them from cheering.

Now that they have coaches, things are basically business as usual, Russell said. “When we got our coaches back, we were allowed to start practicing again, regularly. We got our boosters, like, our funding, back.”

The girls are now back in full performance mode, led by Head Coach Sabrina Rios and Assistant Coach JoAnna Taylor. The cheerleading squad is properly up and running again, cheering on Armijo at sporting events and encouraging others to join in, keeping up spirit.
