Athlete Focus: When Softball Is the All in All

Ziara has been fascinated with softball since she was in elementary school.

For Ziara Gomez, softball is the only sport and, since she is able to specialize, she has had the opportunity to stand out. “When I first got into softball, I was about 7 or 8 years old, and at that time I was just trying every sport I could think of,” she said. “When I had done everything, softball was the sport I really enjoyed the most so I just went on with it.”

Although she started at a very young age, this sophomore phenom believes that she will continue playing softball into college and maybe beyond. After all, when you find a sport you enjoy, you should continue to improve yourself in it. She would encourage others to do just that. “I would just say to go for it and do what it is you are thinking of doing,” she said. “Just remember, it is not always how good you are. It is whether or not you are putting your all into it. Always put 110% effort and be coachable.”

Gomez said that, if she could change one thing about Armijo, it would be that the school treat softball like they treat other sports. “Treat all of your sports the same because you don’t know how much someone puts into that sport,” she said.

As a middle child, Gomez has found her place and her passion. She has an older brother and sister as well as twin sisters who are only four years old.
