Marching Band as PE

Marching+Band+as+PE

Being a member of the Armijo Superband is a lot of hard work but according to an article in the October 13 Daily Republic by Bill Hicks, that hard work may pay off in PE credits for members of all marching band participants in the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD).

The students currently practice more than many athletes, marching and moving and sometimes carrying heavy instruments. They develop hand-eye coordination and train regularly, around 90 hours before the school year starts and 12-13 hour days during weekend competitions, according to the article. This tends to add up to more exercise than is required for a PE class and many believe that it should count toward credits. The Fairfield-Suisun School Board is seriously considering that.

Hicks wrote that “Board president David Isom said there are a number of legal and contractual issues that need to be examined before moving forward with a plan to allow band participation to count for PE credit.” FSUSD is not the only local district discussing this idea.
