Off-Campus Athlete: One-Two Punch

For the past seven years, Michael Javius has been boxing. He is currently in the 165 – 175 lb. weight class, a light heavyweight, and has participated in over 20 matches.

He said that he fought a lot when he was a kid, “So I thought, why not make it legal?” He loves the excitement of throwing and dodging punches. Javius practices in Vallejo.

Boxing is not his only passion. He also enjoys playing basketball, although he does not play for the Armijo Indians. Boxing, however, is his favorite of the two and he has considered becoming a professional boxer, like his role models Sugar Ray Leonard and Mike Tyson. The best advice he could offer students who are interested in boxing is to be flexible. “Bob and weave,” he said, sharing the style that has kept him upright in the ring.
