The Return of Vinyl Records

While technology seems to be taking over all forms of music, vinyl records are actually making a major comeback and it is mostly fueled by the tastes of Generation Z. Vinyl records, which have been perceived as “old fashioned” for the last couple of decades, have been adopted by artists like Frank Ocean, who dropped his vinyl record Blonde in August of 2016, and Tyler The Creator, who dropped Flower Boy in 2017.

There is a lot of places where these records can be purchased. “Rasputin Music” in the Solano Mall has these and many other new albums on vinyl. This store offers a lot of varieties of music, such as punk, rap, pop, jazz and rock.

“I’m really into that old fashioned type of vibe. I’ve been obsessed with collecting vinyls for the longest, said community member Teresa Bejarano. “Ever since I was little, I’ve been collecting them. I don’t know why I’m so obsessed with them because you can use a phone or any type of electronic to hear this type of music, but something about these types of records get to me.”

Vinyl records are suitable for many types of people, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. The challenge is finding a good record player. “I’m a laid back person. I’m into a lot of vintage things. I just like how things used to be back then,” said Adamaris Acosta. “Let me break it down for you: I love listening to music, but I don’t like listening to it on any type of device. I feel that these electronics have ruined the true meaning of music and once I put the vinyl in the record player, like I feel that I transport to another world. That’s why I love it so much.”

Vinyl is starting to come back and the music has a different quality that many experts feel is better than ever. It helps that new artists are once again deciding to drop vinyl records and the popularity of the genre will definitely increase as today’s teens seek new – and old – ways to listen to modern favorites.
