Q: How long have you been a counselor Armijo? Did you work in any other roles here or elsewhere? Can you tell us a little about those jobs?

Counselor Aimee Cheatham: I actually started working as a counselor at Armijo on February 15 this year; however, I also worked as an English Language Learner (ELL) Supplemental Counselor with our school district since October 2021 and I primarily worked at Armijo in the Family Center. In that role, I supported English learners with supplemental individual and group counseling sessions that focused on academics, social/emotional learning, support college/career readiness and career and technical education pathways.

Q: What types of things are you responsible for as a counselor?

AC: Among many things, counselors evaluate student transcripts and do academic planning, facilitate individual and group counseling, connect students and families to resources, planning for opportunities after graduation, and crisis interventions.

Q: Besides counseling what have you done for work?

AC: While I was in school, I worked for various student services on college campuses.

Q: Why did you become a counselor?

AC: I’m passionate about education equality and how it affects our lives and futures; I became a counselor so that I could be in a role that would allow me to directly impact our community and advocate for students.

Q: Where did you attend school – high school, college, etc.?

AC: I graduated from Armijo actually and went on to Solano Community College and transferred to Sacramento State.

Q: What are your hobbies? What else do you do for fun?

AC: I enjoy trying different forms of art, playing video games, and I like to visit museums.

Q: What advice would you give to students considering going into counseling?

AC: To be ready to help others, you have to help yourself first.

Q: Anything else you would like to say?

AC: It makes me happy to be here at Armijo especially since I graduated here; I hope that each student can come here and identify with someone at school and feel represented.
