California State University Northridge (CSUN) is a public university located in the Northridge neighborhood of Los Angeles. As a fun fact, it has the second largest undergraduate population and third largest total student body of the CSU school system. CSUN was founded as the Valley satellite campus of CSU Los Angeles, but became an independent college in 1958 under the name San Fernando Valley State College, adopting its current name in 1972.

At CSUN, there are programs offered that specialize in deaf and hard of hearing, for example a credential in the latter is offered through the Department of Special Education. According to their website, “Through the credential program, deaf studies majors are exposed and prepared for professional careers as teachers, sign language interpreters, sign language instructors, counselors, government specialists, audiologists, speech pathologists, and other deaf-related vocations.” CSUN’s main goal is to create a bridge between the hearing, partially deaf, and non-hearing communities throughout the National Center on Deafness (NCOD).

According to US News, the acceptance rate for California State University, Northridge is 73%, which is not very selective. SAT/ACT scores are not required to submit for admission, however a student’s GPA is a very important academic factor. High school class rank and letters of recommendation are not considered in the selection process at Northridge. The application deadline was November 30, with an application fee of $55.

In-state-tuition at California State University Northridge is approximately $7,100 and for out-of-state at $19,000. This cost includes both tuition and fees, also known as the sticker price, however it is critical that you keep in mind the additional cost of room and board, books and supplies, technology resources, student centers, transportation and personal expenses. But don’t feel overwhelmed! Financial aid is available for students, which can come in the form of student grants, loans, and scholarships. You can fill out the FAFSA form, which opens every October 1st, and is recommended by many experts, as every year, thousands of dollars are being unclaimed by students.
