2022’s Pantone’s Color of the Year Very Peri is transitioning to 2023’s Viva Magenta

What is the Pantone Color of the Year?

“The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer,” said Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.  The Pantone Color of the Year is chosen by Pantone’s color experts at the Pantone Color Institute, who gather information from all around the world, no matter the influence.

Magenta, a pinkish-purplish-red, reddish-purplish-pink or mauvish-crimson, is an interesting color, since “…it is powerful and empowering. According to Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone Color Institute, 2023’s Color of the Year, Viva Magenta, “…reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.  Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.”

Julianne Mobilian, from the Nursery Management Magazine, provides commentary on the color psychology of Viva Magenta.  She states, “As a bright, crimson red, Viva Magenta balances boldness with a feeling of fun. This dynamic mix exudes rebellion, but not at the expense of softness. It embodies an expression of fierce grace, inspiring us to show up with confidence and humanity. “

Viva Magenta, as compared to Veri Peri, is bolder, which could hint that 2023 is the year to really go out there, not just in life but in fashion as well.

If you want to express yourself without restraint, wear Viva Magenta!  For example, you could wear it with colors that would bring out the magenta, including pinks and pale grays. You could also walk into 2023 with a fresh new cut and hair color, since dying your hair red eventually transitions into being Viva Magenta if you have black hair.  Furthermore, if you don’t want to go all out with Viva Magenta, you could keep it on the down low by just wearing it as an accessory.
