Armijo struggled to keep the ball and move it down the field.

Junior Varsity (JV):

The Royal defense only surrendered one touchdown to the Wood offense in the Junior Varsity game on September 7, but turnovers from the offense led to two interceptions returned for touchdowns, and special teams also allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown. The Royals offense also struggled to get momentum for a scoring drive by losing fumbles on three additional drives.

One highlight included a third quarter, 14-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gabe Gomez to Amontay Overstreet. Another was a 36-yard catch and run between Gomez and receiver Isaac Rodriguez. The leading rusher was Camarri Hayes who gained 27 yards on four carries.

Defensively, 15 different players recorded a tackle. Hayes led the way with seven tackles, two for loss. David Powell had two tackles, two for loss, and one sack; Amir Boyd Vaughn snagged one fumble recovery; Toa Atuatasi notched four tackles, one for loss; Overstreet tallied five tackles, one for loss; Malakai Lee had three tackles with one for loss; and Davion Pickettay had two tackles, one for loss.

Varsity:

In an opposite story from the JV game, the Armijo defense did not come to play. Wood scored five TDs in their seven possessions, a field goal in another, and in the only possession that they didn’t score, they got all the way to the 1-yard line.

To make matters more complicated, on the stroke of halftime, Armijo was forced to play without the leading receiver (Kaiba Washington), quarterback (Willie Nickson), and defender (Jericho Johnson). On an optimistic note, a few freshmen shined through: Kimani Dokes threw for 59-yards, ran for 38-yards, and connected with fellow freshman Elijah Thompson on the Royal’s lone touchdown.

Defensively, Jacob Winzer led the way with seven tackles and two for loss. Fellow linebacker Jayson Hubbard notched five tackles. Jace Harris, facing his teammates from last year, tallied six, and lineman Julian Soto had four tackles.
