Ashlee is poised and ready to wrestle.

On Thursday, February 24, Ashlee Gutierrez and Grace Mercado  each went 1-1 in the State Wrestling tournament and were scheduled to compete in the consolation rounds. Karissa McDaniel lost her first match and was also scheduled to compete in the consolation rounds. All three girls were still in the hunt for a medal at that time.

By Friday, senior Ashlee Gutierrez was 3-1 and in the top 12 in California. She would have needed to win her first match to medal on Saturday morning, February 26, but lost. Still, she finished on the top 12 at State going 3-2 and caught the eye of some college coaches.

Gutierrez represented Armijo at the highest levels of the sport and is heartbroken after her loss.

Sophmores Karissa McDaniel 0-2 and Grace Mercado 1-2 were eliminated at Friday’s matches, but they  will be back next year. Both did a phenomenal job representing the Royals throughout the season.
