Club members gathered for a poetry presentation on February 9.

“Black Student Union (BSU) is about empowering, teaching, discussing and exploring black experience,” according to one of the advisers, Ms. Gizzell St. Vincent. The club has a lot of support from the staff, with other advisers and staff leaders including English teachers Ms. Alyssa Phenix, Ms. Elizabeth Leaks, and Ms. Zarena Brown.

While there has been a BSU on campus off and on for decades, this new group of students just became active in January. They have already installed their new officers: President Ineise White; Vice President, Fayola Fasuyi, and Secretary Destany Cleveland. In mid-February, there were about a dozen students and a half-dozen faculty members involved.

“We are here to resurrect BSU and make it a significant club on campus again!” said Ms. St. Vincent. “We are an active club as of January 2022 and look forward to getting more students involved.”

Students and staff from all backgrounds are welcome to join and learn more about the Black culture and history. Meetings are every Tuesday in E7 during lunchtime, although in February 15’s meeting there will be a guest speaker coming to present primarily to the girls in the club.

Everyone is invited to the Black History Month celebration that is scheduled for Friday, February 18 at lunch in front of the library. There will be performers and more for that event.
