Soccer rounds out the season with disappointment and joy.

Varsity: Armijo’s final soccer game for the season against the Fairfield Falcons on Friday, February 4 was a great game overall, with solid play by both teams and great sportsmanship when a few injuries happened.

The Royals came out strong with a full senior starting roster, battling back and forth until about 20 minutes in when Junior Abraham “AB” Perez was able to sink a shot in with an assist from Senior Julian Jimenez!

AB wasn’t done with just one and was able to hit an amazing header into the goal off a perfect cross from Senior Alejandro Godinez.

Armijo ended the first half with 2-0, thanks to some solid work by their defense and keeper Jonathon Harrington. During the half, the team talked about a few things to clean up but, with an unusually short half, they had to get things rolling.

Unfortunately, Fairfield rallied and were able to get two goals in within the first 15 minutes. Armijo picked it back up and, thanks to a foul right outside the box, Senior Andy Diaz was able to sink in a third goal in the last eight minutes to win the game.

The Varsity Royals stepped up and played some great soccer, but it is bittersweet since the 12 seniors on the team this year are not progressing to playoffs. The team has some amazingly talented players and Coach Megan Flores is looking forward to seeing them progress on to college and beyond. “I know they will all do great things no matter if it’s college, college soccer, work, trade school or coaching their own future teams,” she said.

Junior Varsity (JV): The Royals were looking to win their 4th JV League Championship in a row and battled hard from the beginning. Santiago Alvarez opened the scoring to make it 1-0 after he put a left footed shot into the net. Fairfield was able to tie it 1-1 and the game was on. After a corner kick taken by Edwing Pacheco, Santiago Alvarez scored another to make it 2-1 into the half.

The second half was all Armijo, but they were not able to finish the plays. The referee then called a doubtful penalty for Fairfield where they were able to tie the game 2-2. The match ended in a tie but Armijo was crowned champions as they had the most points in the league.

This is the fourth JV League title in a row and the second in a row for Coach Alonso.
