Armijo sends funds to assist Tonga

Relief: $1,077.50

Armijo stepped up again to help send relief overseas. On Tuesday, January 25, Armijo International Club walked into second period classrooms to collect money for Internation Direct Relief in response to the environmental tragedy that struck Tonga on Friday, January 14.

The volcanic explosion and tsunami that hit Tonga was devastating. Ms. Walling-Sisi, the advisor for Armijo International Club and an Armijo teacher since 1999,  served in the US Peace Corps in Tonga in 1993-1995. She met her husband there, and a lot of their family is still in Tonga, so the cause was dear to her heart.

In the past, Armijo has been able to raise thousands of dollars in one hour, so it was no surprise that the brief fund-raiser collected over $1,000 to be used to aid the island nation.

Several club volunteers and International Baccalaureate (IB) students  helped plan, collect and count the donations. “Thank you for your compassion and generosity,” said Ms. Walling-Sisi, who submitted the check to International Direct Relief on Wednesday, January 26.
