Club Corner: Filipino Club

March 1, 2017

Lumpia, karaoke, and compassion.

What do those three elements have in common, you may ask?

Members of the Armijo High Filipino Club meet every week to celebrate and educate about the diverse customs and traditions of the Philippines.

Junior Noellemarie Trost said, “Filipino Club has helped me by reconnecting me to other Filipino youth and recognizing how important my culture is to me. Because of Filipino Club, I have had opportunities to examine what makes our people unique and feeling better as a first-generation kid by creating a strong network with other Filipinos.”

Not only do members have the opportunity to connect with fellow Filipinos, all members regardless of background have the opportunity to learn about the rich Filipino culture.

Through music, art, and food, members of Filipino Club enjoy themselves while learning about culture or simply reconnecting to their roots. Junior Vivian Cuyo said, “In the club, I get to learn more about my own culture and see my traditions. We are all very friendly and open.”

Filipino Club was created several years ago after an Armijo student sought to meet other Filipinos and share the cultural experience. Through the recent years, membership has exploded, seeing a strong club today that gives support and partakes in community service, explores the Tagalog language, and examines clothing and dance.

People made lumpia and we fried it after school. It was delicious!

— Mhelyssa Anunciacion

In the club’s most recent event, members planned for the annual Lumpia Fry-Off. Mhelyssa Anunciacion said, “People made lumpia and we fried it after school. We all got to try them and see who made the best. It was delicious!” Members indulged in the infamous snack and competed for fun.

Currently, the club is preparing for international week. When asked about the her favorite activity of the year, Anunciacion said, “Definitely karaoking during our meetings!”

Not only does Filipino Club take part in fun activities, members also volunteer and contribute time to helping the community. Trost said, “We emphasize the spirit of ‘Bayanihan,’ which is community.”

Filipino Club educates students about Filipino culture and explores the diverse Filipino culture while having a fun time.

If you are interested in joining Filipino Club, venture to F-1, Mr. Inserto’s classroom, on Fridays at lunch.
