Her first name reflects her character

All in a Name

Names shape experiences, as Corageous knows.

Names shape experiences, as Corageous knows.

Corageous Williams got her name from her grandmother. “All I know is that they chose that name in the delivery room because they didn’t know my gender until I was born,” she said. “I haven’t met anyone with the same first name as me, but it would be very interesting to meet someone else.”

People often comment on Williams’s unusual first name. “When it is a stranger, they say, ‘Oh, that’s a pretty name!’” she said. Teachers, on the other hand, often reference the movie Courageous (https://rb.gy/u08xqu).

“Lots of people ask if I’m brave and courageous,” she said. She usually responds with, “It depends on the topic…If it is roller coasters, I am brave. But if it was a spider, I would literally run away!”

Williams said that, if she could choose her own name, she would want it to be Justice because it “has a big meaning to it, physically and emotionally.” Two Armijo freshmen share that name, currently.

In 2003, Williams’s own mother graduated from Armijo after moving to the area from Louisiana. Last year, Williams was able to play softball for the Royals, a sport she had played in elementary school before she herself moved to Louisiana in sixth grade. Now back in California, she is looking forward to going to either UC Davis to study medicine or UC Berkeley to study drama and the arts. She wants to either become a pediatrician or an actor.

Before that happens, she wants to encourage people to fight the virus. “Please wear a mask and wash your hands so we can beat Covid-19 and be safe,” she said.
