Rules for sports are similar, season postponed.

While fall sports, like football, volleyball, cross country and girls’ golf, have had their start dates pushed back to winter, as determined by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), practices in the time of COVID-19 are still being allowed to continue. This way, the student athletes will maintain their skills and strengths for when the seasons start again in force.

“Sports organizations had been following generic guidelines from the state health department,” according to KCRA (https://rb.gy/oyumqv). “The new interim guidelines say that any sports events that would promote congregating outside or inside are not permitted. That includes tournaments and competitions. That rules applies regardless of whether the teams are from the same school or same county.”

Restrictions on actual games and practices would follow the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rules that had already been put in place with the general public: physical distancing of at least six feet and practicing within a stable group or cohort. When groups practice indoors, face coverings would be expected and equipment should not be shared between students unless it can be disinfected between uses. Opportunities for individual conditioning and training, as well as following these rules, will allow student athletes to continue to develop their skills.
