Poetry and video games sometimes go hand in hand

While poems like this are sometimes left as clues for advancement, the characters names can also be poetic.

While poems like this are sometimes left as clues for advancement, the characters’ names can also be poetic.

“The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter, it isn’t  just one of your holiday games,” says T.S. Eliot in his poem The Naming of Cats. It could be said that the same is true for the naming of characters in video games, but sometimes those names can be so poetic. In this article, we will focus on four of those names.

1. Jill Valentine from Resident Evil. Jill first appeared in March 22, 1996 but has not been featured since Resident Evil 3. Valentines have always evoked the image of beauty and love and Jill Valentine does exactly that.

2. Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII. Her character first appeared January 31, 1997, but shows up in other games as well as the Final Fantasy VII film Adevent Children from 2005.Lockhart City in Caldwell County is a very beautiful city in Texas

3. Ivy Valentine from the Soul Calibur series first appeared in December 1995 and is popular in merchandise related to the series. It is not just a coincidence that she shares a last name with Jill Valentine and I find it poetic. Valentine’s Day is actually one of my favorite days in the entire year.

4. Jade first showed up in Mortal Kombat II in April 1993 as unplayable secret character, but became playable in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and also shows up in the 1997 Mortal Kombat: Annihilation movie. Her name is poetic because it reminds me of the beautiful green gemstone that I would love to own because of its bright and shiny color.
