Front cover of Thurstons book

Kindness, the Little Things that Matter Most is a self-help book by Jamie Thurston that preaches about how even the smallest acts of kindness can help someone and better themselves. According to this book, hate only creates more hate and we need more kindness to make a better world for us to live in. Kindness can come in many forms and they name these suggestions to connect them in the reader’s mind. Those clever ideas include names like Be a Seat Vigilante, Give Away a Minute, Embrace Curiosity and Strive for Greatness.

The book is something I would suggest to anyone who wants to better his or her mind. It helps give the reader perspective on how actions can really help people, even strangers. It has 52 ideas from her charity, which spread kindness 52 weeks of the year. My favorite idea from the book is “When someone is unkind to you, it’s tempting to stoop to their level, but much like Kindness breeds Kindness, Hate breeds Hate.” This made me think how much effort is required to be mean; it’s a lot easier to be nice to someone.

The book is a short read that can be tackled in one sitting, but can also be spread out week by week over the course of the year. It’s not a book I would normally read, but it was worth it because of the ideals I got from it. The 52 people talk about how the small act of kindness they were given changed their lives for the better. The book also says to share this book with anyone you know to help them. That’s why I told my friends about it and gave my copy to one of them to read on their own time.
