Ways to Celebrate Winter
The holiday season is here and with it comes exciting events to do with friends and family. The Bay Area has many memorable festive activities to enjoy during winter break.
San Francisco has many holiday events to offer. In Union Square, a Christmas tree lighting will be held on November 23. They will offer performances and the ceremony. This year’s tree is 83’ tall and has 30,000 lights and 1,100 decorations. Other popular tree lighting locations in San Francisco are Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, City Hall, and the Presidio. Also in San Francisco is the classic ballet of the Nutcracker. The Nutcracker has been performing in San Fran since 1933 and shows start in December.
Another merry event is seeing the festive lights and decorations. Various places offer viewings of Christmas lights during the holiday season, with food and performances as well. The San Francisco zoo turns into a Christmas wonderland at night with colorful lights. This family friendly event gives a holiday makeover to the zoo along with shows and games. This is only on selected dates in December and requires a ticket.
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom also does a winter transformation as “Holiday in the Park” is open on certain dates into January. The park this time of year is covered in beautiful lights which can be viewed while drinking delicious hot chocolate.
One free Christmas lighting event is the Union Street Fantasy of Lights in San Francisco. You can walk down the street and see the Victorian houses covered in bright lights as well as performers at the event.
If going out in the chilly winter isn’t your thing, then staying home with family and friends with a warm drink is a special event on its own. Enjoy your winter!
