“We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated but, in fact, it may be necessary to encounter defeat so we can know who… we are and what we can overcome. What makes us stumble and fall and somehow miraculously rise and go on.” This quote is from Maya Angelou, a phenomenal woman portrayed in the Netflix documentary Maya Angelou: And I still Rise.

In the DVD, Angelou tells the secret stories of her life growing up in the South, traveling and meeting new faces while she slowly but surely taught and changed the world.

The documentary was written and directed by Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack, and it introduces multiple actors and professionals that have associated or worked with Angelou, including actresses Cicely Tyson, Lou Gossett Jr. and Diahann Carroll, writers Jules Feiffer and Louise Merriweather, musician Quincy Jones and powerful leaders like Bill and Hillary Clinton and Oprah Winfrey.

Combining archival footage and live interviews, the documentary provides a detailed and impactful look at Angelou as a writer, activist and poet. The film was produced in 2016, two years after Angelou’s death at the age of 86.
