When those of us born in the early years of the 21st century were in elementary school, Valentine’s Day was much different than how it is for us now.

In elementary school, we would show up with Valentines for everyone, complete with candy gifts for our special friends. There would be little baskets at each desk where we would drop off Valentines for each person, cute cut-out cards with different themes like Spiderman, My Little Pony, Hello Kitty, and others. Students would bring different candies: heart-shaped lollipops, Valentine’s Day themed Fun Dips, Sweetarts candies and more. There was always something for everyone and nobody would be left out. Some classes even had parties where students would bring in food and snacks for everyone to share.

In high school, though, things are different, and sadly not as inclusive. While some people still bring in candy and cards to their friends, people are more likely to opt out or go all out. At this level, it is a holiday of extremes. Daniel Zamarripa said, “Now Valentine’s is nothing, no one does anything.” In some ways he wished that things could go back to the way they were in elementary
school, but not all the time.

“In elementary, Valentine’s Day didn’t make you feel lonely but now it makes you feel lonely,” said Vasheta Turman. This is especially true for those who have few close friends or no significant other. “The only thing that’s really stayed the same is how you could still go out and buy other people candy, teddy bears, or just any kind of gift,” she said.
