Breanna McKinnon worked at the Railway Museum in Old Sacramento for about six months, from September 2019 to February 2020. The California State Railroad Museum has been open since 1976, full of exhibits portraying California’s enriching history of railway transportation.

McKinnon decided to apply for the job after a recommendation from Armijo’s College and Career adviser, Ms. Sandy Anderson. At her job, she would either work at the desk, getting people’s tickets, or at the cafe, ringing people’s orders up. The job was fairly simple, with plenty of time to sit and relax between customers. McKinnon was lucky; her hours were on the weekends, so they didn’t interfere with her time to get schoolwork done. Though the customers were nice and there were many regulars, she did end up quitting because of a dissonance with her boss.

This might have been good timing, however, because the Railway Museum has been closed indefinitely as of April 7 due to the COVID-19 spread. However, this does give McKinnon more time to do the things she is passionate about. “I usually play video games or something music related,” she said. “I spend a lot of my time singing and producing my music, audio engineering, animating or playing ukulele.” She plans on going to UC Davis to major in Audio Production and Minor in either music theory or animation in college

A job like hers was good for steady money and saving to go to university. For getting a jump start on applying for jobs, McKinnon suggested talking to Ms. Anderson. “Asking Ms. Anderson is a great idea,” she said. “I've gotten a ton of interviews by contacting her for help.”
