Volunteering is an unpaid activity where a person uses time to help out the community. Enia Aguilera, a student from the Public Service Academy (PSA), makes a difference in her community by choosing to volunteer. Aguilera volunteers about once a week, making a few appreciated hours that add up when all is said and done. She has even won a certificate at her school recognizing her as a student with one of the most hours completed that month.

Aguilera used to volunteer in an elementary school, where she would help teachers organize the classroom and help out in the library. Anything as simple as putting library books away and stapling papers to organize the classroom can help a teacher a lot. In November, she helped out at the elementary school of Cleo Gordon on their Science Night. She has also provided child care at Solano County SELPA. She is constantly on the lookout for new opportunities.

“It just feels nice to help others out,” she said. “I like to help others, especially in my community, and teens in high school who like to do the same should.” Aguilera believes that more high schoolers should be looking for opportunities to volunteer. She hopes to find opportunities to volunteer at North Bay next and feels confident that this will help her on the path into the medical field into her future.
