All in a Name: Spooky? Nah, Sweet!

The Halloween season is all about scaring people, decorating with frightening images and telling terrifying stories. There are rumors that some of the spots around town, and even around campus are haunted. The school even has three resident spirits. Really! Well, that is, if you speak Tagalog.

Ian Justine Espiritu, Athena Espiritu and Evette Espiritu are not related, even though they share the same last name. Athena once met someone else with her last name, someone else who wasn’t related. Ian Justine has not had that honor, outside of school. He, on the other hand, has met both Athena and Evette. Some people even joke around about the name. “I say that I’m “espirtual,” said Ian Justine. Athena’s parents say that she and her 7-year-old sister “were ghosts and devils.”

While Athena’s family is rather small, Ian Justine’s family is more complex, and they all have or will go to Armijo. There’s Jazan Irish (18) and Ivan Joshua (17) as well as cousins Diana (17) and John (22) Sabado.

Ian Justine and Athena have a lot in common, more than just their last name. They both want to go to college. Ian Justine wants to study law at Sacramento State while Athena hopes to go to UC Davis and either study nursing or go into tourism, possibly becoming a flight attendant. “But I will most likely study in the PH,” she said. Both of them said that they were into Rhythm & Blues, “but I also like relaxing music,” Athena said.

While she hasn’t been very involved in any activities at Armijo, she does have some interesting facts about her life. “I’m from Loag City in the Philippines, I don’t have any other family that live in Suisun with the last name Espiritu, and I can speak Ibcano and Tagalog,” she said.

Ian Justine, on the other hand, claimed a history of playing baseball for the Armijo Indians. He also said that he would consider changing his name to Espiricool “because it is cooler.”

Evette was unavailable for comment.
