“You pronounce my full name as Ni-me ing-go ima-tar-rue,” Nimi-Ngo Amatoru said. “My nickname is my name Nimi since it’s a shorten version of my actual name. Everyone calls me Nimi… People tend to ask if that is my actual name or if it’s just a nickname. They also poke fun and say “Nimi’s Cafe”

While Amatoru’s name seems unusual, the fact that she has such a beautiful name is not surprising. It runs in the family. “My sister’s names are Soso and Jemina. My dad’s name is Ipalibo and my mom’s name is Otonye,” she said. Soso graduated from Armijo in 2016.

Her father chose the name and, while she wasn’t technically named after anyone, she does have an uncle who also goes by Nimi. “Nimi-Ngo is unique to me and it mean to be wise or wisdom and wealth….I wouldn’t have any other name,” said Amatoru.

In a year, Amatoru hopes to be studying Science of Health Administration at Sacramento State and playing on their college soccer team. “I’ve played soccer for a long time and it is pretty much my life,” she said. Now, with only one more year left in high school, her life is about to change.
