There are many classic coming-of-age movies including The Perks Of Being a Wallflower and Say Anything, but The Edge of Seventeen is different. It has many unique features that make it stand out from other coming-of-age movies.

The story begins with Nadine (Hailee Steinfeld) and her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson), two somewhat outcast high school juniors who’ve been best friends since they were seven years old. When Nadine catches her brother, Darian (Blake Jenner) in bed with Krista, her life starts falling apart. She starts to feel alone, depressed, and suicidal.

Nadine struggles to move past the fact that her best friend and brother are dating. She bonds with classmate Erwin (Hayden Szeto), an awkward and kind hearted guy who sits next to her in class. Nadine starts having lunch with her history teacher Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson) because she needs someone she can talk to about her feelings.

Towards the end of the movie, her relationship with her mom and brother starts to grow stronger and she begins gradually gaining her friendship back with Krista. Nadine starts not to feel alone anymore, which helps her to make new friends and be more social around others.

This is a very empowering film with a positive message. The element I enjoyed most was how It teaches teenagers who are feeling depressed and think they are alone that there will always be somebody who truly cares for them in the end.  I would recommend this movie to anybody who enjoys a good comedy added with some drama. You won’t regret watching.
