April 2018: Teacher Feature | A Picture of Success

For over three decades, Mr. Gregg Clark has been teaching at Armijo. He has taught photography, a subject that has changed drastically over the years, which allows him to also share a history of the subject as well as modern methods.

In June, Mr. Clark will be retiring, but it may not be the last time students see him in the classroom. “Maybe I’ll come back and sub,” he said.

Mr. Clark didn’t originally want to be a photography teacher. He was a Health, Drivers Ed, and Woodshop teacher at first, but 17 years ago, if Mr. Clark hadn’t agreed to teach photography, the whole program would have been dropped, because there was no other staff member  willing and qualified to teach it.

His favorite part about his job is that working with his students. “They keep me on my toes. It’s tough, but they make it fun, too,” he said. Another thing Mr. Clark enjoys is how popular his class is. “When the class first started, it was smaller, but progressively got larger. I like how interested student become from this class,” said Mr. Clark. In his classes, he teaches students how to use a camera, how to use Photoshop, and how to develop pictures using the dark room. “I love seeing students’ reactions to their work,” he said.

In college, Mr. Clark got his degree in Marketing Design. He also took photography classes at Chico State. It was a part of the curriculum and it qualified him to teach Photography in the end. He went into teaching by first becoming a football coach at St. Pat’s in Vallejo. He then came to Armijo to coach and teach.

The first camera that Mr. Clark owned was a Pentax 1000, 35mm. His favorite photographer is Ansel Adams.
