Ti-Anna Taylor loves being the co-captain of the varsity cheerleading squad. “I prepare to lead my squad by making sure we all look nice and presentable,” she said. “Being a captain for the second time is really a great experience and I’m glad to be a captain my senior year.”

Taylor started cheering with the Armijo Indians in 2014 and immediately became a co-captain of the junior varsity (JV) squad. “I’ve been cheering for about four-and-a-half years now. I have been to lots of competitions because I cheered at an all-star gym called SWAT.”

While cheering is important, the most memorable game that Taylor recalled was the one against Rodriguez. She recalled when a fight broke out during her sophomore year at the game. “They are so intense!” she said.

Cheer is a yearlong sport, spanning both fall and winter sport leagues. Taylor is also involved in track on campus and will be starting club volleyball in December. “Cheerleading isn’t as easy as it looks,” she said, recommending that anyone new to the sport practice a lot.

In the fall, Taylor hopes to go to a school within the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) system where she intends to continue as a cheerleader. Eventually, she wants to become an Emergency Room doctor.
