Jan 2018: Sibling Spotlight | The Girls’ Turn

In the last edition, we introduced the Alvarez brothers, Elijah and Isaiah. This time, we’re going to take a look at a pair of Alvarez sisters, no relation.

Rosa and Nayeli enjoy sharing the Armijo campus most of the time. They even share a ceramics class. “She’s always there when I need her,” Nayeli said of Rosa. “People confusing us is the best!” said Rosa.

But all of this togetherness does have its drawbacks. “The worst thing is definitely when people mistake me with her. People are always asking if we’re twins and we always say, ‘NO!’ Nayeli said.

“I want to keep my personal life away from my academic life,” said Rosa. “Also, if I do something bad, she will know and tell on me.”

Armijo isn’t the first campus the sisters have shared with each other. They went to Fairview Elementary and Grange Middle School together, but they don’t expect to go to the same college. “We want to major in different things,” said Nayeli. She wants to become an entrepreneur and start her own business, something that will make her known worldwide. Rosa, on the other hand, plans on focusing on art, maybe using her talent in cosmetology, hair styling or tattooing.

Both girls like to hang out with friends, although Nayeli specifically commented on her interest in parties, especially Mexican parties “because they are so much better and they are really fun.” When it comes to movies, Rosa is drawn to Tim Burton films while Nayeli prefers horror movies.

At home, the girls have to stick together as they have shared their household with three brothers, ages 23, 19 and 7. In spite of this challenge, the two do argue a lot, according to Rosa. She thought that Nayeli would probably describe her as “too petty” while Nayeli felt that Rosa would describe her as “annoying…and that I like to bake.”

In the end, though, it is all good. What would sibling life be like without rivalry?
