Dec 2017: Volunteer | Teaching and Learning

Armijo senior and International Baccalaureate (IB) student Arnoldo Ibarra has been tutoring children between the first and eighth grade since October of last year. His duties include helping them with their math, their reading, and “really anything else they’re having trouble with,” he said. Ibarra aims to tutor kids at least three times a week.

Ibarra initially began tutoring kids for the Creative / Active / Service (CAS) hours required by IB, but he quickly grew to love it, saying that it “brings out [his] inner child.” He believes that the experiences he gained while tutoring have changed him positively, saying that he “feels like [he is] making a difference because [he is] helping children learn.” Ibarra said that the work is far from easy but the feeling of satisfaction after a job well done is worth every bit of effort.

After Ibarra graduates in June of 2018, he’s unsure what he wants to do next. “There are so many things we can become in life and so to choose one career for the rest of my life does not interest me,” he said.

If Ibarra won the lottery he would spend it very humbly, like funding a trip for his parents to visit their family in Mexico. He would also use the money to help out his less fortunate family and “take some of [their] worry away.” The rest he would save as he currently has “everything I need,” he said.
