How to Avoid Getting Caught in a Sweep

With the new administration, there have been some new changes to the focus. One of
the most noticeable ones is the increase in tardy sweeps.
Students who have been late to class are often encouraged to attend, with the help of
teachers and monitors shouting, “Get to class!” But another method, a tardy sweep, is more
intense.
A tardy sweep is when the administration increases the number of eyes on campus and
herds the late students into the office, providing the offenders with an after-school detention
before allowing them to return to class. Some students find that this procedure is a little scary
because campus monitors and other staff seemingly come out of nowhere after the final bell
rings.
Another way that the administration Is trying to minimize the number of tardies is by
providing detentions for students who have been repeatedly tardy to their classes. Spending
half an hour after school is never fun and hardly worth missing the first few minutes of class.
The solution is simple. Those who want to avoid these penalties can simply get to class
faster. If first period is the challenge, it helps to wake up earlier or make more effective plans to
arrive at school on time. Those who get to school and are in class on time will end up avoiding
staying after. Detention is no fun, but it can be avoided, at least when it comes to attendance
issues.
