Leading the cheer

Kaelen Tabasa is the varsity cheer captain for 2017-2018, which means that she is in charge of picking music for routines, leading practices, sending any reminders, and calling out cheers. Although the routines are made by the team as a whole, Tabasa is responsible for putting things together and taking the lead to choreograph dances.

“I enjoy many aspects of cheer, but I think my favorite part is how we can instill positivity into our school,” said Tabasa. “Not only do we pump up the crowd at games, but we also lead. I think one of our biggest jobs as cheerleaders is to set the example and tone for our school.”

Tabasa has set many goals for the team and herself, making routines of which she is proud while maintaining a 4.8 GPA. She wishes to enjoy senior year. “I want to make this year memorable by staying involved! I have to be proactive if I want to make memories. I don’t think I’ll remember the nights I stayed at home on my phone,” she said.

Along with cheer which she started her sophomore year, Tabasa is involved in Armijo’s Leadership program and is the secretary of the Filipino Club. “I don’t plan to continue (cheer) in college.” She hopes to be attending a UC in the Northern California area next fall, majoring in political science with a minor in English.
