September 2017 Sibling Spotlight: The Challenges of Sharing a Family and a Name

Annamarie Vigil has two brothers. Their names are Joe. It may seem a little awkward to be in a house with two boys with the same name, but the Vigil family makes it work. They have to. The head of the household is also named Joe.

The older brother is only two months older than Annamarie and the younger one is less than two years younger. The three of them have “always been really close,” Annamarie said. Their favorite childhood memory is making clubhouses and sleeping in them.

Annamarie is closer to her older brother, who is sometimes referred to as Joe Angel, and said that “little Joe is the most annoying.” Trust is important in their family. Despite her feelings for her younger brother, Annamarie said that the three of them can tell each other anything. They all count on each other, whenever something comes up.

Two of them will be leaving Armijo in June and that means that the dynamics will be a little different when they leave the younger brother behind, but that makes their experiences so much sweeter. Annamarie said that one of their best memories was going to their grandma’s house in Los Angeles. They spent a lot of time there together, swimming and baking cakes until midnight.

While they spend a lot of time together, they also have developed unique personalities. “Joe Angel is the most outgoing,” said Annamarie. Joe Angel said, “Annamarie is the most shy out of all of them, but once you get to know her, her personality is way different!”
