September 2017 Teacher Feature: Off to a Good Start

Ms. Shiva Javdani is one of the many new English teachers in the halls of Armijo. She teaches two sections of Honors and three of her classes are College Prep level.

She did all of her studies at Sonoma State University, getting her bachelor’s degree in English literature and she earned her teaching credential in May 2017.

After only a few weeks in her new job, she said that the best parts are “working with students, building relationships with them, and getting the content to be meaningful to them.” And the hurdles? “There aren’t enough hours in the day and the commute from Davis gets tiring.”

Some things she likes to do in her free time are travelling, eating food, spending time with her boyfriend, and being in nature. She recently travelled to Italy, visiting Rome, Pisa, Florence, and Cinque Terre, which was a great experience as she also got to connect with family members that she hadn’t seen in years.

Some of her hopes for this year are that her students “take whatever they learn and use it in some way,” she said. She is very thankful to her colleagues. “I think all the other English teachers are kind, they really reached out to me,” said Javdani.
