A remarkable and innate quality of being a human is the ability to adapt and evolve. It is a habit that creates periods in history, marks times, and is the foundation of our society.

Like the ability to adapt, a human is able to love. From the Lovers of Pompeii to the first Valentine’s Day celebrated in the year 496, love is something as old as humans themselves. When the ability to love and the inevitability of adaption are combined, a holiday that has been celebrated for well over 1,000 years can evolve.

As previously mentioned, Valentine’s Day, perhaps the most famous holiday celebrating love, has been celebrated since 496 AD. Since then various unofficial holidays have risen, including Galentine’s Day.

As time has progressed, platonic relationships have been recognized as just as important, if not more than romantic relationships. From this idea, Galentine’s Day was born. Galentine’s Day was first introduced in the television series “Parks and Recreation”. In the words of the creator herself, Galentine’s Day is when, on “February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”

Coined by the character Leslie Knope, Galentine’s Day is a modern holiday, celebrating female friendships. As Knope explained, Galentine’s Day is celebrated on the day before Valentine’s Day. Since that episode of “Parks and Recreation” first aired, Galentine’s Day has become incessantly popular.

Growing in fame and popularity exponentially, there is no specific moment in history when this holiday became something highly anticipated. Still, unlike its infamous counterpart, Galentine’s Day is not an official holiday. Despite this, it is still celebrated by many, notably similar to the concept of Friendsgiving.

Typically, Galentine’s Day is celebrated through brunch, gift-giving, or the most common way, self-care in some form. However, Galentine’s Day is something that is celebrated how you wish. There aren’t any rules telling you how to have fun on Galentine’s Day, it is completely based on preference, a quality that separates itself from other holidays. This is attributable to its modernity, there aren’t any set traditions or celebrations; its celebration is fluid and subjective.

Not only does Galentine’s Day create an outlet where female friendships are celebrated and cherished, but it also shows the effect and power of pop culture. An entire holiday was born from a television show; something with its roots in television is now celebrated annually.

Galentine’s Day remains a great way to show the women in your life that you appreciate and love all that they do. Linked by the blanket concept of love, Valentine’s Day and Galentine’s Day ultimately focus on the display and appreciation of love in all forms.
